Yesterday's posts on jam bands brought out folks who seemed to not have much love for the jam bands. To me that whole musical scene just seems to be the natural progression of what the Grateful Dead were doing and has been lots of fun and keeps the spirit alive. So if you don't like these bands and I wonder why (we all know none of them can be the Dead) what do you listen to, especially newer music?

I do like jambands, but other than that, here is a bit of the "newer" non-jam music I have been listening to:

Ray LaMontagne
Amos Lee
Angela McCluskey
Ari Hest
Joanna Newsom
Trespassers William

(plus some ambient artists like Lucette Bourdin, Karunesh, Akshara Weave, Steve Roach, etc)

The only two that you mention that I even know of are Akshara Weave and Steve Roach. Guess I am in the world of SF bands, jam bands, jazz and blues and some Americana.

You must have a decent familiarity with ambient if you know Akshara Weave and S. Roach. Pretty cool stuff :)

i didnt bother listing any of the jazz or blues i have been listening. but if listing jazz, i would have to add the Zawinul Syndicate, Jan Garbarik, and Keith Jarrett and as on my rotation quite often lately.

Actually, I listen to GD less than anything else lately. So much "new" music I am discovering (or at least new to me.)

Also been listening to some classical lately - esp. Sibelius, Albinoni, and Clementi.

Listening to a bit of Classical here too. Got Beethoven's
9 symphonies by Arturo Toscanini recently. Notice you mentioned Sibelius, have a couple of discs by him that I really am not that familiar with, will play this weekend. Always exploring Miles and Coltrane.

If you have Sibelius' string quartets - give them a listen - just beautiful. (Symphonies are no slouches either)

The LVB symphonies I have are Anton Nanut orchestrations - kinda subdued imo. Toscanini's name rings a bell - those are probably better recordings. Just LOVE Beethoven's 6th!!

Realized after reading your list that I hardly listen to any newer music except for the jam bands. The exceptions are Buddy Miller, Steve Earle and Darrel Scott. Otherwise I keep exploring the roots.

I'll second that. The Mountain is a must-have. Del is great on the record, but it's Ronnie McCoury's mando and Steve Earle's vocals that make the album special.

Indeed, Ronnies backup vocals are top notch too..there's a video floating around cyberspace where they do the whole album, old school, around a single microphone. Good stuff..i still get chills when I hear The Mountain.

Jeeezzz, I dunno any of them...I really gotta get out more.

Here's the "hits" CD playing RIGHT now while I am working (kids made it for me from stuff of theirs I heard and liked...oh, and yeah, I recognize many are "oldies" but they must be trying to mix it up so I don't go into "non 68" shock or some such):

VFemmes
Clash
Eels
WhStripes
SEarle
Pogues
Smpumpkins
ToadSprock
Strummer (Clash guy?)
OysHead (hey BD!)
VFemmes (again)
RHCPepps
THeads
JTull
Raconteurs (sp?)

Can't name the others...they are trying to expand my horizons, and if you care, Ring-e-low, there's a great tune in here that one told me they gave the lyrics to a girl! "I held her in my arms" by VFemmes if anyone cares.

On that note i'm gonna latch on and list a bunch of other archive bands I consider worth mentioning. Not that these are the only good bands on archive...these are the bands I found just randomly hunting and pecking at bands I specifically had never heard before.

I'll just go alphabetically through my personal library:

Animal Liberation Orchestra
(jazzy jamband group)

Big Daddy Bluegrass Band
(take a wild guess)

Brent Hopper
(one guy with a guitar 2005-04-1 great vocals)

Cabinet
(jamgrass)

Cornmeal
(jamgrass)

Dread Clampitt
(jamgrass)

Earth Bombs Mars
(jamband)

EOTO
(live electronica)

Gordon Stone
(jazz/jamgrass)

Grass Is Dead
(killer bluegrass Dead cover band)

Greensky Bluegrass
(more jamgrass yall)

Head for the Hills
(jamgrass, i'm beginning to see a pattern)

Horseflies
(ya oughtta check out some jamgrass)

Land of Atlantis
(funky jazz...you thought i was gonna say jamgrass)

Monkey Navigated Robots
UPDATED: If nothing check out their 2007-02-05 cover of Come As You Are...great 20 minute jam
(funky jazz, A+, not enough shows posted)

New Mastersounds
(funky jazz...very tight)

Poor Mans Whiskey
(jamgrass...2007-05-08 they cover the Dark Side of the Moon)

Sarah Watkins
(the chic from Nickel Creek...gorgeous voice)

South Austin Jug Band
(bluegrass)

Teddy Presberg
(excellent funky jazz guitarist...reminds me of Scofield)

Two High String Band
(bluegrass)

There's plenty more all over archive...thats just what i've found so far that I like.

They put the delay and compression effects on the fiddle and it just blows up the sound (in a good way)

Hello Boys! I'm glad you found this. I hope it wasn't difficult. Who knows the technology available to you. Writing/posting on the Internet is probably like rotary phones or VCR's in 2011.
This is another of my dairies for you. Since you were subjected to much Grateful Dead music growing up as children, I figured these 4,000 odd posts might shed some light as to why I ,and Mom, loved their music so. The content varies from just music. There is some witty repartee, silly (mostly) arguments and a slice of life of this time.
I hope it sheds some light on your father as well. I tried to keep Jesus in my heart throughout, but as it always is for His creation, that was not always the case. So, there are some unflattering moments. Like my punctuation the first 2,000 posts!
I wrote this dairy with you as the 'person' I was writing to from this first post to the end, which is also this post. Trippy. :-) I hope this brings more laughter and insight and not so many tears. It's all in one package and you can't separate any of it out anyways.
August 9th is the day Jerry Garcia died in 1995. His artistry profoundly effected Mom and me. His vocal phrasings ,complete with last consonants always sung, could bring you to the depths of despair or make you fly like a Monarch in the sun. His guitar playing would draw both of us all over the country when we were young and lead to a life filled with his music. We never stopped missing him.
Lastly, I choose my handle on the verse, not on your name Micah. Though the verse is why you have your name. It's a great verse. Mom is Dancing Deb.

So my precious ones, another window for you if you choose. I love you beyond words and look forward to seeing you in Paradise.

Today I was driving around listening to the Flamin' Groovies album "Teenage Head". I guess that qualifies as new when placed next to Son House, who I was listening to yesterday.
